Today's Rant

Well if you're still watching me: congratulations, you are one of the very few.

It's been over a year since my last journal entry and although I have been on and around deviantART in all that time, entering things into my journal has not been a priority for me. So I thought it might be an idea for me to throw something new in here.

I noticed that I spoke of layoffs in my last entry from way back, and after a turbulent and busy winter it has finally happened--The company I worked for for over eleven years has gone out of business putting over 50 of us out of work. You can blame the US economy (our biggest clients were in the US), you can blame the Canadian economy, or you can blame the ignorance of those people who think that sending jobs overseas is "good for business," but it doesn't help those of us that have lost our jobs. I still can't fathom the stupidity of company bean counters who think that offering India pricing to North American vendors would stimulate better pricing. All you did was put more and more North American companies out of business, you idiots, and now I will laugh at you when the Indian companies you're left with double and triple their prices for the same low-quality work that you're getting now. I really hope you wallow in your own ignorance.

The trouble is that most of the bean counters have no clue as to what goes in to good Graphic Design and fewer still care. All most of them cared about was getting the most work for the cheapest price--who cares what it looks like? I dunno, but if it was me who was in charge of a major educational textbook purchase for a school system and I knew that the publisher I was looking at farmed all of their work out to India, I would not purchase their products. After looking at the quality of work that comes back from overseas countries, where English is not their first language, it really disgusts me that these books are being put into the education system at the very same prices as books that were once made over here. Half of them have glaring spelling and grammar errors, nevermind how crappy they look visually...

In any case, in the upcoming weeks and months I will be out looking for new work, both full-time and freelance in the Graphic Design/Page Layout/Mac Operator field. I'm not sure what I will find but I don't have a lot of choices these days. Maybe I'll get around to posting some new deviations here, but again it is not really my priority these days.

G'Day World Podcast  <img src="img.photobucket.com/albums/v22…"  alt="Aussie Geek Podcast" title="The Aussie Geek Podcast" align="center" />   Portfolio with Jade Macalla

These are some of the podcasts I listen to on a regular basis.

Cameron Reilly is a 30-something Australian lad who does this little podcast called G'Day World, first launched in 2004, where he talks about everything and anything under the sun. Cam has been branded as "Australia's First Podcaster" and is CEO of The Podcast Network and Australia's #1 digital media guru.

The Aussie Geek Podcast talks about everything tech, from Web2.0 blogging, the internet to product reviews and software even what they did on the week-end. Two Aussies, one Canadian, and quite often a mad Belgian get together and talk about Tech. The Aussie Geek hosts are quirky, pithy, and often amusing so have a listen. You can subscribe on iTunes or listen directly from their website. (Used to be Global Geek Podcast.)

Portfolio is by deviantART's own jademacalla. Portfolio is all about exploring ones creativity and Jade does a great job of hosting. Jade has done interviews of some of deviantARTs more popular names, including lockstock, LongStock, and Nisori. Keep an eye on Jade's Journal or Jade's Blog for more good stuff.
